(review) Peanut Butter & Co.--The Heat is On

When was the last time you were surprised--in a good way-- by a product? Honestly, it doesn't happen all that often to me. (Maybe I need to try more new products? I welcome suggestions!) But surprised was just what happened when I picked up a jar of Peanut Butter & Co's The Heat is On.

At first I wasn't sure what to expect. I mean, a spicy pre-made peanut butter? Sounded...well, it didn't sound terribly appealing. I've used spicy peanut butter for savory recipes--chicken strips with peanut sauce comes to mind--but in all those cases I mixed up the peanut butter sauce, adding my spices, right before eating it. How would a pre-spiced peanut butter taste. Hmm...

As soon as I opened the lid, I knew the peanut butter wasn't what I expected. I assumed (and you know what they say about assuming!) that it would be a slightly sweet, slightly spicy peanut butter. Something like, I don't know, spicy kettle corn. But the aroma coming from the jar was all spice. I swiped a generous spoonful.

And, oh my goodness! The name doesn't lie. The heat is ON in this peanut butter. 

When my mouth cooled down, I took a closer look at the ingredients. First, there's no sugar in this peanut butter. Why I assumed this peanut butter would be sweet is beyond me. Here's what in it:

Peanuts, chili powder, cayenne peppers, crushed red peppers, paprika, palm fruit oil, vinegar, salt.

See that? Three sources of spicy, yummy heat. It's the type of heat that really warms your mouth and throat. But it isn't so hot that it's flavorless. Some things, at least to me, get so hot that all I can taste is heat. Not so here. You can taste peanuts, a little cumin, and, of course, the red peppers. It's wonderful for anyone who loves spice.

Since it's not something you'd put on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, what do you do with it? I've used it as a dip for raw veggies. It's also great spread thinly on corn tortillas as part of a chicken-veggie wrap. (Nix the mayo for this type of wrap.) And I've played with using it in the pineapple chicken strip recipes I'm posting for members this week.
