Brown Sugar Butter Bar Recipe

I can't tell you how much I love these bars! They are by far the easiest recipe I have made in a long time--and I make *lots* of easy recipes. You don't even need an electric mixer to put this recipe together! If you are pressed for time (and who isn't?) but still want to make homemade treats for Christmas, I highly recommend this recipe. Now that you know how easy they are, let's talk about the flavor. This recipe causes me to fall in love with baking all over again. A quick scan of the ingredients reveals there isn't anything out of the ordinary in the bars. Just dry ingredients, brown sugar, butter, and an egg. There isn't even vanilla in this recipe! However, you won't miss it. The butter and brown sugar are cooked on the stove. This coaxes out nuanced flavors in both--think deep caramel and brown butter! . . . keep reading


Sour Cream Cookies

I've sent a recipe for sour cream cookies that was a family favorite for many years. My husband's grandmother loved to bake cookies. When my children were three and five years old she was in town visiting and came to our house for an afternoon of baking. She came in the house saying, "The cookie monster is here!" My children giggled with delight. Unfortunately she is no longer with us, but I think of her often, especially when baking. My children, now teenagers, would love to eat their great-grandmother's cookies again.

Brown Sugar Drops
Dear Elizabeth,
I have a funny Christmas cookie story for you. Each year my mom would make these cookies when she wanted us out of the kitchen! I've never seen a recipe like this. You make the dough on the stovetop and then you need to keep it warm while you work. Since it requires cooking sugar, she told us we could not be around while she made it. Of course, she would then put on her favorite Christmas music and enjoy some time without the kids. We were rewarded for staying out of her way with a plate of these cookies. Now I am a busy mom and would like to make these cookies. I hope the recipe can be converted.

Molasses Cookies

Thank you for converting holiday cookie recipes. When I saw the notice in the newsletter, I knew I had to dig out my recipe for molasses cookies. My mom would make these cookies on Christmas Eve. I've always thought of them as "molasses sugar cookies" because that is what they taste like to me. A few years ago I attempted a gluten-free conversion of the recipe. They were hard and broke apart easily. I'd like to make them again. Any help or hints you can give me would be appreciated.

Chocolate Covered Cherry Cookies
The day after Thanksgiving, my Mom always makes chocolate covered cherries. By Christmas, they are ready to eat. She tried to teach me how to make them, but it seems I am not a candy maker! One year I decided to shock my mom and sisters (who all have the candy making gene), by announcing that I had made "chocolate covered cherries". Well, they almost fainted. When I brought out a tray of these cookies, with a big grin on my face, everyone roared with laughter.
I'm helpless again! Not only can't I make the chocolate covered cherries, now I can't make these cookies. A gluten-free version would make my Christmas!

Buttery Coconut Cookies

These cookies have such a different but delicious taste! Every year I used to make a double batch for Christmas.
