Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice Cereal with Mixed Berries

Lately I had fallen into a bit of rut when it came to breakfast cereal. Rice Chex and I had been spending far too many mornings together. So, when Erewhon sent me some cereal to sample, I was more than happy to try it out.

The box that grabbed my attention was the "Crispy Brown Rice with Mixed Berries". Honestly, it was the idea of "Real" raspberries, strawberries and blueberries that intrigued me. I guess as adults we have traded in crunchy marshmallows in our cereal for freeze dried fruit? It sounded good but how would it taste?

I poured a bowl. The first thing I noticed was the crispy rice had a little bit of a shine to it. On the front of the box, I noticed the cereal was "lightly sweetened." And, the shiny crispy rice, seemed to indicate this. A quick scan of the ingredient label showed that Erewhon sweetened this cereal with brown rice syrup and honey. As someone who doesn't have an issue with traditional sugar, this was neither a plus or a minus for me. However, if you avoid traditional cane sugar, you'll be happy to know none is included in this cereal.

Sitting in my bowl, among the pretty crispy rice pieces, were a good deal of freeze dried fruits. To be frank, I was surprised by this. I expected only a few pieces of fruit, maybe one or two per bowl. But happily my bowl was dotted with crunchy pieces of real fruit.

I added my milk and took a taste. This cereal was GOOD. It was more than good, actually. It was yummy. Really yummy. The fruit added wonderful flavor--first it was crunchy, then soft as it sat in the milk--to the cereal. As for the sweetness, Erewhon wasn't kidding when it stated, "Lightly Sweetened." Personally, I liked the sweetness level. I am not a fan of dessert-sweet breakfast cereals. If, however, you like a sweet cereal, you might be disappointed.

After my initial sampling of the cereal, I enjoyed it several more times. And, I am happy to report, each time I poured myself a bowl, I was greeted with lots of fruit pieces in my bowl.

I highly recommend this cereal. It is tasty and has a great "crispy rice" texture.

Grade: A Summary: Crispy Rice cereal, sweetened with brown rice syrup and honey. Pieces of freeze dried fruit are throughout the box.
