(review) Pillsbury's Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

I love chocolate chip cookies. Love ‘em! Before going gluten-free, I'd occasionally buy a log of “slice and bake” chocolate chip cookie dough. Was the slice and bake dough as tasty as homemade cookies? Nope. Was it easy and tasty? Yup!

So it was those cookies I kept in mind as I tried Pillsbury's new gluten-free chocolate chip cookie dough. I didn't want to compare them to my homemade cookies because, let's be real, homemade tastes better. But if they were like the old slice and bake cookies I remembered? Win!

The Dough

Unlike slice and bake dough, this dough comes in a little tub. How little? 14.3 ounces. So not tiny; it's just a little smaller package than Pillsbury's other non-gluten-free refrigerated dough. When I opened the package, the cookie dough looked pretty normal. And as I scooped the dough, I noticed lots of chocolate chips throughout the dough. One thing I noticed, the dough didn't smell strongly of brown sugar, my favorite part of chocolate chip cookies. I rescanned the ingredient label. Oddly, the first ingredient listed is brown sugar.  Maybe my nose is off today.

Scooping

The tub instructs you to “spoon the dough by tablespoonfuls” onto an ungreased cookie sheet. I like my cookies a little larger than one tablespoon; so I used my handy cookie scoop. The dough, even cold, scooped easily. I plopped the dough onto an old nonstick cookie sheet and popped them into a preheated 350 degree oven. So far, so good.

Baking

The cookies didn't spread too much during baking. After eleven minutes, the cookies remained underbaked. At this point, the color of the cookies looked odd. Some spots were nicely golden brown, other parts of the cookies remained pale. Hmm... Back into the oven they went.

After thirteen minutes, the cookies were done. As they came out of the oven, I noticed that they were now evenly golden brown. I let them cool for two minutes on the baking sheet, as directed, and then moved them to a cooling rack. Not one cookie stuck. Always a good thing!

The Taste and Texture

After the cookies cooled, I tried one. The cookie tasted pretty good. Each bite contained chocolate chips. And, happily, they didn't skimp on the quality of the chocolate chips. They use real chocolate and not some weird chocolate-flavored chips.  As I ate the cookie, I wished they contained a little more vanilla flavor but other than that, they tasted like traditional chocolate chip cookies. In fact, they reminded me of the chocolate chip cookies that were sold in my high school cafeteria. That's a taste flashback if there's ever one!

The texture teeters on the border of gumminess. I'm guessing that the combination of three (three!!) starches and xanthan gum contribute to the mild gummy texture. However, I think you could interpret the cookie's texture as a soft baked chocolate chip cookie rather than a gummy one. After the cookies cooled, they remained soft, instead of turning crisp.

The Ingredients

Rice flour, three starches  (corn starch, modified potato starch, modified tapioca starch), and xanthan gum combine with chocolate chips and other ingredients to make up the dough. Nothing weird or exciting here. Which is fine with me. I'm boring when it comes to traditional chocolate chip cookies.  The cookies contain soy, eggs, and milk which are both listed in the ingredient list and in an easy-to-read list under the ingredients. It would be easy to see these allergens listed just by glancing at the package.

Price

I paid $4.59 for the tub. That's $5.02 per pound. I noticed that Pillsbury's non-gluten-free “Simply Chocolate Chip dough sold for $3.99 per pound. Ours is more expensive but at least it's only a dollar more.


Overall

These are solidly good cookies. Am I throwing out my recipe for homemade chocolate chip cookies? Not at all. Would I buy these again? Maybe. I really like them. I don't love, love, love  them. However, if  there's  a day when I crave a warm chocolate chip cookie and don't feel like baking, I'd consider buying a tub.
